In a fast growing coaching industry, credibility matters more than ever. Clients are increasingly seeking coaches who are certified, ethical, and aligned with the highest professional standards. That’s where the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and mentor coaching play a pivotal role.
If you’re working toward your ACC, PCC, or MCC credential, or you simply want to refine your coaching presence, ICF mentor coaching offers more than just a box-checking exercise—it’s a transformational journey.
What is ICF Mentor Coaching?
ICF defines mentor coaching as a collaborative process where a credentialed mentor coach provides feedback on your coaching skills, aligned with the ICF Core Competencies. Unlike supervision, which may focus on the emotional or relational aspects of your practice, mentor coaching is specifically designed to help you:
Strengthen core competencies such as active listening, powerful questioning, and creating client awareness.
Refine your coaching presence so that each session is client-centered and impactful.
Prepare for your ICF performance evaluation, ensuring your recorded coaching sessions demonstrate mastery of the required level.
Why Mentor Coaching Matters
Many coaches underestimate the value of mentor coaching, seeing it only as a requirement for certification. But in reality, it offers three key benefits:
Skill Deepening – Feedback from an experienced mentor helps you notice blind spots and expand your range as a coach.
Confidence Building – Knowing you are aligned with ICF’s global standards allows you to show up with authority and integrity in every client session.
Credential Success – Whether you’re pursuing ACC, PCC, or MCC, mentor coaching ensures your recordings and coaching approach meet ICF’s rigorous benchmarks.
Common Questions About ICF Mentor Coaching
How many hours of mentor coaching are required?ICF requires a minimum of 10 hours of mentor coaching over at least three months.
Can mentor coaching be done in groups?Yes. Group mentor coaching is allowed for up to 7 of the 10 hours. The remaining 3 must be one-on-one with your mentor coach.
Do I need a mentor coach at every credential level?Yes. Each time you apply for a new ICF credential level (ACC, PCC, MCC), you’ll need fresh mentor coaching.
Choosing the Right ICF Mentor Coach
Not all mentor coaches are the same. The best mentor coach for you will:
Hold the credential level you’re pursuing or higher (ICF requirement).
Provide both supportive encouragement and constructive challenge.
Offer structured feedback using ICF’s Core Competencies and PCC Markers.
At ICF Coach Mentors, Eliza and I specialize in guiding coaches through this process with a focus on developing the skills that truly evoke client transformation.
